Fourth and Allen

Wyatt Earp walks out of Hafford’s Saloon, lighting a cigar. Frank McLaury and Billy Clanton, after drinks, swing out of the Grand Hotel, onto their horses, in their show-off rags, flat hats, wild shirts, high boots. Doc Holliday, by the Cosmopolitan, salutes them: How are you this fine day. They glare at him, turn up Fourth, dismount, go in Spangenberg’s Pioneer Gun & Locksmith Shop, where Tom McLaury’s sticking cartridges in his belt. Frank’s bangtail steps up on the sidewalk, against the law; Wyatt strolls over and yanks it back into the street. The cow-boys shock, Billy lays his hand down on his pistol, Frank kicks out, snatches the reins, leads the horse away, as Ike walks up. Inside, the clerk looks at the wound on Ike’s skull, and shakes his head. The cow-boys, in bright bandannas, loading their guns, stare out at Wyatt. Virg comes out of Wells, Fargo with a Stevens ten gauge shotgun.
